Lunch

Her face at last. Apologies for lateness.
Forced laughter and complaints about "the boss."
He greets her with his usual crisp sedateness
And makes as if her absence was no loss.
She just wants fries. He's on his second Whopper.
She keeps on chatting. He picks out the gist.
She plans a frantic whizz round Happy Shopper
And only has ten minutes for this tryst.
Their eyes meet for a second. His seem shielded
And don't say how he's ached since last they met;
While hers are full of ecstasies unyielded,
Then focused on the folded serviette.
He's spent all morning practicing The Question,
But now decides today is not the day.
He swallows fear and belches indigestion.
She thanks him for the lunch and slips away.
