Summer song

Included as the opening piece in the collection Angels and Astronauts. First published in Apostrophe, and later in Literary Review, with a flattering note by editor Auberon Waugh. Later included in the anthology Poetry 2000 from Robson Books, London. Other publications that have printed the poem are The NeoVictorian/Cochlea (Madison, WI) and The Word (Middlesex).

The sun is full of swallows,
The sky is baby blue,
The bees are drunk on nectar
And the grass is wet with dew.
The seagulls and the sea breeze
Are hung above the town,
And I'm in love with the bicycle girl
Who's young and blonde and brown.

Amongst the ripe tomatoes
A plane bisects the sky,
And up and down the fragrant street
The sweaty prams go by.
A ginger cat is swinging
Lopsided in a tree,
And I'm in love with the bicycle girl
Who's wild and fresh and free.
